On September 23, Global Citizen Festival 2023 returns to the iconic Great Lawn of Central Park in New York City with headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Other headlining acts on the Great Lawn include Megan Thee Stallion, Conan Gray, and Stray Kids.
Global Citizen Festival is a free, ticketed annual music festival where fans take “actions” (i.e., signing petitions, sharing messages on social media, writing letters to politicians, and more) toward ending extreme poverty through the Global Citizen app (or here.) “For the first time in a generation, the number of people living in extreme poverty is rising,” the website’s statement read. Therefore, this year’s festival campaign tackles issues perpetuating poverty, like climate change, global female inequities, and the global hunger crisis.
Starting August 11, Global Citizen app members will have four opportunities to earn a chance to win festival tickets by taking “actions” to earn festival points that can be used to enter ticket drawings.
The inaugural Global Citizen Festival took place on September 29, 2012, with a 60,000-person attendance on the Great Lawn, bringing performances from Neil Young, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Band of Horses, and more. Since then, powerhouses like Rihanna, Beyoncé and JAY-Z, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, and more have billed the festival.
“The campaign will unite millions of voices, amplified by the world’s biggest artists, to demand urgent action from world leaders gathering in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly in September,” the website’s statement continued.
Last year’s 10th anniversary spectacular pulled A-list talents like Metallica, Mariah Carey, Charlie Puth, Usher, SZA, Rosalía, and Måneskin with the goal to end global poverty.
