Revisit MD Discovery: carobae is “still scared to go to sleep” on EP

It’s time the world is formally introduced to Caroline Baker—otherwise known as carobae. The Nashville-based artist dropped her latest EP on May 18th last year, 2023.

Artist Profile: carobae

Caroline Baker got her introduction in the music industry much like many other artists—through the grueling process of submitting demo after demo until a record label bites. In a moment of resilience, Baker decided to take charge of her career and release her music independently. And from there, carobae was born.

carobae initially dipped her toes into the industry as part of a punk-rock trio, Tramp Stamps. The group produced few singles and only one EP before ultimately dissolving in 2022. Their grungy discography slightly contrasts the music that carobae is known for; nonetheless, it is a testament to Baker’s artistry and her ability to excel in multiple genres.

In her solo career, carobae has released an array of singles and albums. One particularly interesting part of carobae that sets her apart from other artists is her transparency and support for the music community. After enduring so much rejection and confusion while producing her own work, she has sworn to share her knowledge with those looking to follow in her footsteps. You can see this on her YouTube series, “Caro Explains It All.” Here, she walks artists through music applications and basic production tutorials. These videos mimic the works of her inspiration, Jon Bellion, who also produces “behind the song” content. Both artists are prime examples of the beauty of music—and this authenticity is something that is reflected in their discographies as well.

s2g2s, Out Now!

Dubbed s2g2s, carobae’s EP is a short but emotive introduction to what Caroline Baker has to offer. It largely aligns with that of many other female artists on the rise—a close relative to Olivia Rodrigo, an isolated GAYLE or even an angstier Elli Moore. Nonetheless, still scared to go to sleep is composed of five tracks that take listeners on a rollercoaster of sounds and melodies. A personal favorite song off the EP is “bleed you out,” which really highlights Baker’s complex, yet rewarding production skills. Her opening track, “till the day I ___,” featuring LØLØ, exhibits a catchy chorus that discusses the lost mindset of a 20-something-year-old navigating life and career. It’s a strong standout track and a great introduction to a greater extended play.

Since then, carobae has released two singles: “stupidly” and “ghostbusters.” Though it will probably be a few months before she drops another EP or album, listeners can continue to enjoy both her newer and older music.

It’s a wonder that carobae hasn’t received widespread attention yet. If you’re looking to dive into carobae, give still scared to go to sleep a listen. The EP demonstrates everything you need to know about carobae’s insane artistry in only 17 short minutes. But it’s 17 minutes that you won’t regret.
