The kicked off with an opening number from Lea Michele and the cast of Broadway’s Funny Girl. Other spectacular performances by Broadway’s Beautiful NoiseSome Like It Hot, and The Lion King, Paula Abdul, Sesame Street and Muppets, Kirk Franklin, Sean Paul, Big Time Rush, and Jordin Sparks.

The Queen of Christmas Had A Year Of Unforgettable Moments

Songwriter Hall of Fame Inductee

Carey and Dolly Parton may be the centerpieces in everyone’s holiday traditions. But even Dolly has to admit: the “Fantasy” singer-songwriter had a worthwhile year.

This June, the elusive chanteuse headlined the new inductee class to join the Songwriters Hall of Fame. To achieve this nomination, the Director Board published its guidelines: “A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song.”

Nearing 33 years in the game, she wrote timeless classics and 18 of her 19 No. 1 hit singles. But within that time she revitalized the R&B genre and pop-rap collaborations with the albums Honey (1997) and The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). Carey playfully stood on the stage, gowned and full of smiles and endless humor. “Out of the 439 total inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, only 32 have been women up until this moment. Now it’s 33. As my father once told me: you did good, kid.”

The Forgotten Carey: Someone’s Ugly Daughter

This year also saw more grounding recognition for Someone’s Ugly Daughter. Don’t know it? Well, who would know about Carey’s long-lost grunge album recorded secretly in the Daydream era (1995)?

Beyond the quick mention in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, it was originally released under a band named Chick, and Carey contributed backup vocals. Now, the singer found the alt-rock album with her lead vocals have been found and hinted at a possible release.

A New Carey Christmas

Yes, there was Carey’s voice MasterClass and celebrating Butterfly’s 25th anniversary with new remixes, 4k music videos, and a new Brandi collaboration. But to end with holiday cheer, the singer released her first children’s book, this time with memoir co-writer Michaela Angela Davis titled, “The Christmas Princess.”

“The Christmas Princess is a fairytale for holiday lovers of all ages!” Carey shared in an Instagram post. “Little Mariah represents my inner child believing in her own vision, she represents all children, especially those who feel like outsiders or “others”, striving to believe in themselves. It was empowering to transform my childhood turmoil into a modern classic fairytale full of wonder and boundless hope.”
