Jazmine Sullivan Reclaims Her Power on “Tragic”

R&B queen Jazmine Sullivan dropped her latest single last Friday, “Tragic.” It follows up this year’s album Heaux Tales.

“Tragic” is a Continuation of Heaux Tales

Jazmine Sullivan has been blessing us with her music since 2008 when she released her debut album Fearless. The Philadelphia-native made quite an entrance breaking in on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at Number 6. That wasn’t all, but it was also certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Jazmine just released her fourth album this past January, Heaux Tales. Well, only half a year since then, she is blessing us with even more music with her new single “Tragic.” “Tragic” borrows from Rep. Maxine Waters’ famed “Reclaiming my time” meme as Jazmine reflects on a relationship that wasn’t worth her time. She proceeds to criticize a lover whose performance is disappointing thus being a waste of her time. “When your d*ck is tragic. Who was lying when they told you you was all that? And we had it. Just another good laugh in our group chat (Just another, just another). Reclaim, reclaim, reclaim, reclaimin’ my time,” she sings in the chorus.

Heaux Tales also marked Jazmine’s first project in six years. She indeed, calls “Tragic” a continuation of the full-length album. The album dropped to critical acclaim and significant commercial success. Since then, she’s made various appearances performing at the NAACP Image Awards and singing the national anthem alongside Eric Church before the Super Bowl.

Jazmine Talks About Her Latest Project

Jazmine recently covered Essence magazine, which featured a conversation between the singer and mogul Issa Rae. While for months she has specifically referred to her latest project as an EP, she shared in the interview, “It’s an EP, but it’s changing for me now. I feel like now it’s more of a project or an album, just based on the effect it’s having on women.”

She added, “I called it an EP at first because I felt like it was too short. I had been away for six years. I was like, I can’t come in and just call it an album. But from the response—what it has turned into for women and what it’s doing for women, how it’s empowering them—it’s like an album.”

Heaux Tales features a total of 14 songs, including “Girl Like Me” featuring H.E.R. and “Price Tags” featuring Anderson .Paak.
