Inside Backing Up Some Of The World’s Biggest Acts With Eden Coleman

We caught up with New Zealand dancer Eden Coleman as she plans a US relocation on the heels of Coldplay and BLACKPINK performances.

While any engaged music fan is no doubt aware of the sheer amount of music that hits streaming on a daily basis, the invisible factor in that is how many individuals are involved with supporting that material. Be it executives, engineers, or marketers—it’s nearly exponential the workforce behind every face that the average consumer recognizes.

That goes even further when it comes to live performance. Though the term “backup dancer” implies a lower spot in the hierarchy, for a position that some may overlook, they play an integral role in bringing performances to life. Even those who may recognize their importance likely aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of their day-to-day.

Coleman’s Rolodex Includes BLACKPINK, TWICE and Coldplay

Given her social media following, there’s a decent likelihood you’ve already heard of Eden Coleman, a perfect example of this side of the industry we’re seeking to illuminate. Even if you’ve come across her before, her rolodex is worth explicating: Karol G, Jennifer Lopez, TWICE and LE SSERAFIM have enlisted her for both live support and as a part of “skeleton crews:” akin to “reference tracks” in an auditory sense and an integral part in an artist’s further choreo.

Though those acts are headline-worthy in and of themselves, unquestionably the top lines on her CV are backing up Coldplay on their most recent world tour, performing with Rita Ora at the Women’s World Cup and delivering the same for BLACKPINK as a part of their headline Coachella performance. When asked to describe her biggest surprises from those shows, she shared: “the energy from the crowd was totally insane and electric.” Their overall dedication to craft and seamless working relationship with Coleman and her fellow dancers stood out plenty, but, the unrelenting fandom they carry wherever they travel came as its own unique surprise: “during rehearsals [the Blinks] knew where we were at any given moment. It was wild!”

Eden Coleman Eyes LA For Next Career Steps

While if you plucked a concert attendee out of any given crowd and quizzed them on the performers’ names they were partying to, you’d likely have mixed results, there’s no underselling the impact that they have on the overall experience. Take it from Coleman: “Well-crafted choreography…  creates a stronger connection with the audience, turning sound into a full sensory experience and making each moment more impactful and memorable for the audience and performers/artists on stage.”

The Eden Coleman CV is already off to an eye-catching start, but trust and believe, there are further horizons she’s got her sights on. The generation of choreographers and luminaries she looks up to partially light the way for where she’s hoping to take things next: Kiel Tutin, Todd Williamson, Parris Goebel, and Sienna Lalau, a roster comprised of award winners and founders, just some of the names that she lists as inspirations. In particular, it’s “the way they’ve carved unique paths while staying true to their creative vision” that is so energizing, Coleman shares. “Their versatility, work ethic, and ability to blend artistry with commercial success are qualities I strive to emulate.”

So what exactly is next for the New Zealand native? For one, changing locales. While she’ll continue to pursue opportunities in her home country, Coleman is circling Los Angeles for this next chapter. Given what she’s already got under her belt, safe money is on bigger and better things no matter where she calls home.

Stay tuned for Eden’s next steps via her social media pages.
