Get into “pl4yg1rl,” the multi-dimensional synth-sick title track from “PLAYGIRL,” the second album from Lolo Zouaï.
“pl4yg1rl” by Lolo Zouaï
Dial-up is back, and Zouaï wants you to pick up. The third single from the artist’s sophomore album, “PLAYGIRL,” features a jittery, flirtatious energy unheard in past work. The industrial production has some quirky pops reminiscent of SOPHIE or Shygirl but ultimately harkens back to the early 2000s– AOL messenger vibes. Even the “glitchy” elements sprinkled throughout can be tied to Hannah Diamond or LIZ.
However, the track is undeniably Zouaï’s as she yearns for attention and guarantees some stress-free time. She sings in the chorus, “Pl4yg1rl.com / Wanna get lucky? Keep singing my song / Need a lil’ game? You bettеr log on / Stuck in your head? Make you wanna stay on.” But as soon as the distorted harmonies disappear, so does her autotuned digital presence.
The Music Rediscovery of Lolo Zouaï
Our Music Discovery alum is as busy as ever promoting her sophomore album, “PLAYGIRL.” After sharing the album teaser trailer, the artist took to Instagram to have a heartfelt moment. Zouaï writes,
I can’t believe its all finally happening. After my first album I genuinely thought I couldn’t make another. It took me a long time to understand what I wanted to say with my music while I was growing and changing with the world. Now that it’s coming out I can finally say that I’m SO SO proud of what we made and all the work put in to creating this record. I love it with all my heart & hope you will too 🙂
In June, the singer also released “Blur,” an intimate track with an interesting balance between PC and R&B. Zouaï recounted a night she spent with a crush, despite already having a partner. This spring, while opening for Dua Lipa‘s USA tour stops, Zouaï included the song as part of her setlist.
