“Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo recently made his return to Broadway in the Tony-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen. Matarazzo is currently playing Jared Kleinman, Evan’s family friend who helps him fabricate fake emails, among other things.

According to Dave Quinn at People, Matarazzo’s first show was on July 19th, and his Dear Evan Hansen debut had a few special guests in the audience. “Strange Things’ co-stars Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke watched his performance and stuck around to visit with Matarazzo at the end of the show.

Audiences can tell that Matarazzo is happy to be back on stage. “Words could never express how truly honored I am to be a part of this company,” he said in a statement. “This show has taught me so much about myself and to be able to participate in any capacity, let alone on Broadway, makes me want to melt. I am ecstatic to be back on stage and eternally grateful for the opportunity.”

A Broadway Baby

However, this isn’t Matarazzo’s first stint on the big stage.

Jack Hobbs at the New York Post says Gaten Matarazzo’s Broadway debut was back in 2011 at 9 years old in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. In 2013, he got to appear in Godspell for a one-night performance. Then, the next year, he played Gavroche in Les Misérables, the same role he played on the show’s 25th Anniversary North American tour. In 2019, although not on Broadway, he played Jack in Into the Woods at the Hollywood Bowl.

In 2020, Matarazzo participated in Harmonize Against Hunger. Harmonize Against Hunger sought to raise money for Feeding America and Project Broadway. Matarazzo sang “Michael in the Bathroom” from Broadway musical Be More Chill. Check out his performance below.

Gaten Matarazzo is clearly no stranger to the world of Broadway.
