Who are Fromis_9?

Fromis_9 is an eight-member (previously nine before one left) girl group formed on the 2017 TV show Idol School. Debuting under Pledis Entertainment, the group belongs to the same subsidiary of HYBE that is also home to the iconic boy group Seventeen. 2018 marked the year of the girls’ first project and, in 2024, they now have nine mini albums and one full-length album. Known for their visuals and incredible vocals, Fromis_9 should be a bigger group than they are. The problem is Pledis Entertainment has trouble promoting this group. After 14 months of their fans, flovers, begging Pledis for a comeback, and even a member going live to express the group’s annoyances, we finally got one.

Unlock My World, Fromis_9’s first full album release, is what initially piqued my interest in the group. The first track on it, “Attitude,” is one of my favorite K-pop songs of all time. It showed a different side to the cutesy, high-energy concept they tend to stick to. I appreciated the song’s mature direction and sassiness, making it easily the top five best b-sides from a Korean group. Also, the production in “Attitude” plays such a catchy beat that feels unique and different from anything released by them or any other group.

“Supersonic” Review

On August 12, Fromis_9 came back with a single album, Supersonic, and its title track of the same name. The girls are known for making the most catchy summer releases and this one is by far the best out of that category. A balance of the deep vocals and higher registers from each member truly shines on this song. As a fan, I also appreciate the mostly equal line distributions, giving the girls a chance to shine individually within the group.

“Supersonic” has Miami bass elements and a faster upbeat feel to it. It perfectly captures the feeling of summer and bright energy, which is perfect for its August release date. This is not my favorite title track, but it’s definitely up there in comparison to previous comebacks. The mix of newfound maturity and the usual good-feeling music makes this song truly stand out. Pledis giving the girls a comeback where it feels like the kind of music adults make is exactly what was missing in their outstanding discography.

The music video for “Supersonic” doesn’t have a storyline. It shows off their perfectly executed choreography, their perfect visuals while posing and an overall summer feel to it. Over nine million people viewed it in the first 48 hours, and it immediately debuted on Korean charts. This shows people have been fighting and waiting for this comeback. Originally, everyone was concerned for the girls after one of the members went live wishing for more frequent comebacks. On Twitter/X, a hashtag was created with thousands of posts, all from K-pop lovers. The posts told Pledis to do a better job managing the group. Here’s hoping that, next time, it won’t take social media begging for a comeback to happen. The girls look so happy to be back doing what they love and the song really helped bring their popularity back.

Fromis_9 are incapable of making a bad song, releasing two b-sides for this project that are absolutely amazing. Check out the album below!
