I don’t think you understand Flyana Boss’ success. A quick Google search, and the hip-hop duo has their own emoticons running underneath the search menu. They signed to Atlantic Records in 2021, and their song “You Wish” gained massive popularity online in 2023.
Folayan Omi Kunerede tells Genius that they make music for the “girls, the gays, and the theys,” to which Bobbi Lanea Tyler further included “any disenfranchised groups.” While the duo hail from Detroit, Michigan, and Dallas, Texas, they met at a music college in Los Angeles, California, and immediately began collaborating.
“You Wish” vaulted to a No. 1 debut on Spotify’s Viral 50 in the US, thanks to the duo’s energetic running videos. The trend garnered millions of likes on social media. It took them to endless collaborations with Google, Atlantic Records, and even TikTok’s offices. And, thanks to Flyana Boss’ months-long campaign, “You Wish” just crossed the 25M threshold on Spotify.
The demand is so high that Kunerede and Tyler released a “You Wish” remix featuring the iconic Missy Elliot and rapper Kaliii. “There’s nothing but encouragement we’ve received from her,” Tyler told Popsugar. “It’s our wildest dream to even have her say our name, let alone in a song of ours, let alone all the DMs, the tweets, the responses. It’s unbelievable. Hopefully, we’ll have a long history with Missy.”
The duo is currently touring with Janelle Monáe on The Age of Pleasure Tour, with numerous brand deals including Pizza Hut and DoorDash. While they are riding the success of “You Wish,” Flyana Boss released its accompanying music video. They also continue to put out catchy singles like “Miss Me” and “Nu Nu.”
