Empress Of Goes Rogue For New Single ‘Femenine’

"Femenine" follows Empress Of's collaboration with Rina Sawayama, "Kiss Me."

Empress Of—born as Lorely Rodriguez from Los Angeles—drops her new single “Femenine,” a pulsing and sweaty house track. The accompanying music video features a sultry dance party (directed and choreographed by Emmy winner Ryan Heffington) with plenty of Euphoria-like ambiance and mouth-watering moments.

Despite a year of collaborations, “Femenine” is a solo release and the first Spanish-language preview of Rodriguez’s still-to-be-announced record. Highlighted by September’s “Kiss Me” Rina Sawayama, Empress Of also guested on “Highway” with Lewis OfMan and “Wild n Sweet” with Jam City this year.

“Was a dream to work with Ryan,” she said in a statement. “No one moves like him and no one sees through a camera like him. Legend is an understatement and I loved working in this fever dream fantasy with him.”

“Femenine” itself feels like another new career high for Empress Of with Harper’s Bazaar calling the singer-songwriter “empowered, embodied,” and “wholly self-realized.”

Rodriguez attributed the creation of “Femenine” to needing to create a dance track that resembles Miami’s Space nightclub, where the studio sessions turned into a steamy daydream. “I was in Miami working with some producers and songwriters I love,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

“I was in the studio with my friends, and we were just chatting and gossiping; that’s kind of what we do when we get into the room together. Then we think of themes. They were asking, ‘Well, what kind of guy do you want?’ And we just started imagining this guy, hoping he’d come around.”

Earlier this year, Empress Of opened for Carly Rae Jepsen on her North American tour and billed festivals at Outside Lands, Corona Capital and more.
