Our Music Discovery Artist, Ellie Dixon, creates “pop music with brains” with standout tracks like “CEO Of Watching Television.”
Music Profile: Ellie Dixon
Ellie Dixon is a 23-year-old Cambridge-born music artist who self produces from her bedroom studio. Dixon created her own brand of self-aware alt-pop described by SheWolf as “pop music with brains.” Her music is a culmination of indie pop, rap, jazz, and R&B. Dixon’s influences include everyone from Easy Life, Still Woozy, BENEE to Anderson .Paak. But, amongst her favorite artists, she still finds the perfect spot to blend in her love for the unconventional.
Since 2020, Dixon has taken the online world by storm; her following grew by 1000%. Some highlights include an invitation from BBC Radio 1 to record a live session at BBC Maida Vale, reaching 3 million total streams on Spotify with 135 thousand monthly listeners, a featured BBC Radio 1 Introducing Track of the Week (Green Grass), and the opportunity to headline the BBC Introducing Stage at the Latitude Festival and perform on the Big Top stage at Camp Bestival in 202o.
Dixon rereleased her 2021 EP “Crikey! It’s My Psyche” to promote its newest (promoted) single, “CEO of Watching Television.” The EP is self-produced, a constant for the singer’s catalog. The sounds and theme of this single and the record are similar to Alessia Cara‘s 2016 album “Know-It-All” and its sparse R&B/indie-pop flare.
Analysis of “CEO Of Watching Television” by Ellie Dixon
The track is a collection of unusual, quirky sounds, a hearty piano, and light-hearted ad-libs. Dixon relaxes from the stresses of adulthood and spends it eating, hanging out with friends, and, of course, watching television. She muses about undid work, “Oh-ooh, it’s quarter to two / Sitting in bed I’m just not in the mood.” Then, the chorus lights up with an intelligent decision: So I take a load off / A load off / My executive decision/ Sit and chill out in the kitchen / Sick of playing Mr. Business.” Chimes sound. It’s genius. She will just take business calls in her PJs.
While the production isn’t typical for radio play, Dixon builds an interesting contrast between robust and soft sounds, specifically on the song’s bridge.
