For many, the past year has been an emotional rollercoaster, but not for Curtis Waters. The past year has allowed him to ride out an all-time career high.
Curtis Waters Unveils “DOODOODOO”
Curtis Waters’ strengths are his intense lyrical imagery and fearless approach to difficult topics. The North Carolina based singer-songwriter tackles anxiety, sadness, and the world we live in through critical eyes. Although, no matter how jaded (or realistic) he is, the music he makes from it is warm and bouncy. Similar to that of Elise Davis or Troye Sivan.
“Doodoodoo,” his latest single, is no different. Just shy of three minutes, the track is clever and playful. (Even the album art is an Animal Crossing video game version of Waters in an animated bubble bath.)
The song talks about loving on a significant other. Waters doesn’t need a special holiday to celebrate his favorite person or be intimate with them. Loving someone is about cherishing every moment, which is all the performer wants to do.
Slyly, Curtis Waters said in a press release that the song is just “about taking a bath.” Paying attention to the song, though, means finding out a lot more about it’s intentions and message.
Waters wrote, performed, and also produced the song, which is his first of 2021. Since it’s release, the track is already soaring toward a million streams on Spotify alone. (At the time of writing, it’s just shy of 800,000… Not too shabby for a musician who only came onto the music scene a year ago.)
Record Release and Going Gold
In 2020, Curtis Waters released his debut album Pity Party to critical acclaim. Listeners relished in the relatable, angsty, and occasionally depressing lyrics. Still electric and energetic, though, the entire indie pop album felt personal – because it is. In a press release, Curtis delved deeper into the meaning behind the fan favorite record.
“‘Pity Party’ is an album I started when I was at a very low point in my life when I dropped out of college and moved back home last year. I had a lot of time to think about all my struggles growing up as a brown kid in North America dealing with mental illnesses and the guilt that came with it. It’s about getting better at coping with life. I get a lot of brown kids messaging me telling me I make them feel like they can do anything too, which is awesome. Hopefully people can listen and feel less alone. That would make all the difficulties worth it.”
Curtis Waters’ range of talents in both music and multimedia exceed all expectations of an up-and-coming artist. The perfect example is his debut single’s recent RIAA certification. “Stunnin’” featuring Harm Franklin was released in early 2020 and was also the first song Waters released. It didn’t matter, though, because he ran it to the top. The hit was recently certified Gold in the United States. (It also was featured on Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Songs of 2020 list and surpassed 650 million global streams.)
