boygenius Playlist Reveals the record’s Inspirations

Laying the Foundation for the record

boygenius is no stranger to the burn of heartache and loss. The trio’s music aches with the sting of regret and scattered memories. Each song cuts to the bone with searing lyrics and seamless harmonies. Their debut album, the record, takes inspiration from all corners of the minds of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. In August, boygenius crafted a massive 82-song playlist including many of the inspirations behind the record’s sound.

The boygenius: Blueprint playlist is home to many different genres and sounds. Indie powerhouses like King Princess, Big Thief, Mitski, and Bon Iver & St. Vincent are celebrated. Punk influences include Marika Hackman, Great Grandpa, The Joy Formidable, Angel Du$t, and Joyce Manor. Additionally, the boygenius playlist also features legends like Cyndi Lauper, Regina Spektor, and the late Sinéad O’Connor. boygenius’ playlist even pulls from funk artists like Parliament. “Cool About It” and “Revolution 0” take inspiration from folksier tracks in the playlist like Defiance and Ohio’s “You Are Loved.” All of these artists lend to the record‘s rich, enveloping style.

The graveling rock riffs of Slow Pulp, On and On, and The Cars meet with the booming drums of Band of Skulls and Frank Black on the boygenius playlist. All of these influences create an album that so effortlessly floats between being moody, introspective, and flat-out explosive. The trio are currently bringing boygenius: Blurprint’s dynamic, flowing energy to their tour spanning across the U.S., U.K., and Europe.

Along the tour, boygenius will also be playing live with Jay Som. The trio’s touring band, Jay Som is not only part of the tour, but a huge inspiration listed on the boygenius playlist. The tour will also feature opening acts from 100 gecs, Carly Rae Jepsen, illuminati hotties, Ethel Cain, Muna, and Palehound.
