For the first time since December 2010, the top three albums on the weekly Billboard 200 albums chart are all by solo women.
All Women Top The Billboard Album Chart Since December 2010
Billie Eilish, Doja Cat & Olivia Rodrigo are all at the top of the list with Eilish taking the number one spot. This is a huge accomplishment, as it’s been over ten years since three women claimed the spots. The last time this happened was on the December 18, 2010-dated chart. Back then, Susan Boyle’s The Gift was tops, followed by Taylor Swift’s Speak Now and Jackie Evancho’s O Holy Night.
The global stars made history on the Billboard list dated August 28. Right now, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever is No. 1, followed by Doja Cat’s Planet Her and Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour.
Billie Eilish: Happier Than Ever
All of these albums have gained critical acclaim and made the artists win over millions of fans. Starting with Billie, she broke the internet earlier this year when she changed her famous neon green and black hair and went fully blonde. Also, when she posted provocative pictures of a photoshoot for Vogue Magazine, being the talk of the world for a while.
Marking off the start of the new era, her singles “Your Power,” “Lost Cause,” and “NDA” all gained millions of streams within less than a day from their release. Billie has an upcoming concert experience coming to Disney+, where fans will be able to enjoy the entire album from the comfort of their homes.
Olivia Rodrigo: Sour
Olivia had kind of a similar situation at the beginning of the year. Her debut single “drivers license” broke the internet as well, having millions of people talking about it over social media. Being that she was only 17 years old at the time of its release made young fans relate to the song.
When she released the next couple of singles “deja vu” and “good 4 u,” she captured the eye of even more people, including millennials. The early 2000s pop-punk sound that could be heard in “good 4 u” made all these new listeners fall in love with her music, and subsequently, buying and streaming Sour when it came out.
Doja Cat: Planet Her
Last but not least, Doja Cat became a sensation when her 2019’s hit “Say So” went viral thanks to TikTok. The song had millions of people dancing along to its choreography for the platform, which later made these people listen to Doja’s other songs as well.
Earlier this year, she teamed up with SZA for their banger “Kiss Me More,” which is on the right track to earning 1 billion streams. The song just came out in April, but fans fell in love with this collaboration instantly, which made them wait patiently for Planet Her and jam along to the rest of her songs.
