Ariana Grande went from promising no music this year after filming Wicked to releasing a whole album. After a few months of silence, she announced her seventh studio album, eternal sunshine. The project was produced and written by Grande, along with some help from Max Martin, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Oscar Görres, etc.
eternal sunshine came with the lead single “yes, and?” which was completely different from the rest of the album. On March 8th, the full-length project came out. The second promotional lead single was “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).” That song has been going viral all over social media since its release, with over 400 million Spotify streams. “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track is Grande’s ninth song to reach this milestone. “the boy is mine” serves as the third track of the album to go viral, especially on TikTok. The album was at No. 1 for two consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
“we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” Review
“we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” is a synth-pop track with a very heartbreaking message. It’s a vulnerable song that talks about the state of Grande’s relationship with her ex-husband, Dalton Gomez, and her feelings about moving on to someone new. It stands out as a powerful single reminiscing on what was once a true love story. The song is an impressive single, but it differs from the rest of eternal sunshine. As a whole, the album is R&B-inspired, with a hint of modern pop from Max Martin’s genius production.
Music Video Review
The music video for “we can’t be friends (wait for your love) includes actor Evan Peters. He stars as Grande’s past lover (seemingly referring to Dalton Gomez). Ariana Grande used the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Ariana Grande used the movie as a main reference point for the video. Grande tries to wipe the memories away from her brain, as she associates pain with Gomez. Her acting skills are phenomenal in the video. Grande sobs while people try to erase some of those memories. In the end, Grande and Peters have lovers by their sides as they pass each other. Gomez allegedly cheated on Grande, which is why he had someone beside him in the final scene. The music video was a tear-jerker, and certainly captured the whole story of the album.
