Loreen’s ‘Tattoo’: Behind the Eurovision Winner

The new hit single, “Tattoo” by current Eurovision winner Loreen has topped the song charts since May. The song, which was previously performed at the Melodifestiation contest on February 25, was released at the time of the contest. The so-called pop anthem explores a troubled romantic relationship along with the singer’s important bond with her boyfriend. Given the obstacles to stay in the relationship, the singer is determined to keep her boyfriend in her life. The title “Tattoo” is merely a metaphor for her boyfriend to be a permanent thing in her life – just as a tattoo is a permanent thing on a person’s skin.

While Loreen is rumored to be the writer of “Tattoo,” the song is actually a collaboration between Melodifestation’s song writers. This includes Peter Bostrom, aka Bassflow, who wrote one of Loreen’s previous songs “Euphoria.” The others include Thomas G:Son, Jimmy Janson, Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt, and Cazzi Opeia. Lorreen recounts that when the song was sent to her, she immediately knew there was something special about it. She says “that the experience was akin to falling in love.” The single was released after Melodifestation, becoming the artist’s number two song on the Swedish music charts after “Euphoria.”

Loreen was born Lorine Zineb Nora Talhaoui on October 16, 1983 in Stockholm, Sweden to Moroccan immigrant parents. She started in music when she took part in her first Swedish Idol in 2004, where she finished in fourth place overall. After that, she released her first single, “The Snake,” while also presenting the TV show Lyssana. After the show was over, she worked as a segment producer and director for a few Swedish reality TV shows. She returned to the public eye when she performed in her first Melodifestation in 2011 and 2012. She performed Swedish chart-topping songs at both contests, taking her first win in 2012. She then performed again later in May 2012 at Eurovision in Baku, Azerbaijan. There she won Eurovision for the first time.

In the aftermath, she has made more chart-topping singles and albums, as well as performed at more music contests. She had her acting debut in April of 2020 and signed with the new label, Universal Music Group. On the side, Loreen is also a political activist, speaking out about human rights and becoming the Swedish Ambassador for the Afghanistan committee of Sweden. Back in 2022, she performed at a live fundraising gala to support Ukraine through the Russian invasion.  She will hold her Tattoo Tour starting November 7th of this year, which will travel throughout various European cities.
