Aya Danioko was born in the Malian capital of Bamako into a family of griots (storytellers), the first of five siblings. Her family settled in the Parisian suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois, where she grew up and trained professionally. Her stage name is based on that of Heroes series character Hiro Nakamura.[2]
The singer began posting her music online in 2014, starting with a track called Karma that appeared on her Facebook profile. Noticed by the Warner Music France talent scouts, Aya Nakamura signed a record deal with the label, under which she released her debut album, Journal intime, in 2017, which reached #6 in the French charts and was certified Gold for selling over 50,000 copies nationwide. The album contains the single Comportement, certified platinum for 200,000 copies sold.[3]
