▶ Featured Artist: Doechii

Class, Meet Doechii

This week’s featured artist is one creating music that tells her story and others.  Doechii, the Tampa-born rapper and singer, is making a name for herself in the music world with her experimental multi-genre music.  Her chameleon sound creates music that mirrors the experiences of others and also memoirs her own life.  Because of her art, only four years into her career, she has already toured with SZA, been spotlighted by Spotify as a 2022 artist to watch, and gained the respect of huge names in the game like Doja Cat.

The Chronicles Of Her Life

The story of Doechii begins with the release of her viral hit “Girls” on Soundcloud. Since then, the singer has released two projects.  First, Coven Music Sessions, Vol. 1, and then Oh The Places You’ll Go. The latter is a 9-track collection of songs, and is truly a documentary of herself.  In it, Doechii narrates growing up, being black and queer, and her dreams of what she wants to do with her career.  Additionally, the viral song, “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” is a tell-all introduction of herself as a kid. She moves through different flows; passionate, intimate, gentle, and fervorous – each encapsulating her ability to story tell.

Nevertheless, She SurprisesDoechii From The "Crazy" Music Video

However, Doechii is not afraid to show that she can do it all.  Recently, on her latest single, “Crazy,” she cements the fact that she is a force to be reckoned with. Describing the song as “uncontained power,” the song and music video alike are made to challenge how we think about stigmatized imagery. Doechii shows aggression and anger on the track.  Nevertheless, these are moments of truth for her. The riotous single is pumped full of energy as she charges through each verse showcasing her assured delivery and candid penmanship.  As a Black woman Doechii knows about being feared for being misunderstood.  With NPR she says about the track, “People call you crazy when they fear you or they don’t understand you. I’m reflecting that energy back on them to show them themselves.”

Doechii’s latest single, “Crazy” is out now.  Watch the music video here.
