Aya Danioko was born in the Malian capital of Bamako into a family of griots (storytellers), the first of five siblings. Her family settled in the Parisian suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois, where she grew up and trained professionally. Her stage name is based on that of Heroes series character Hiro Nakamura.
The singer began posting her music online in 2014, starting with a track called Karma that appeared on her Facebook profile. Noticed by the Warner Music France talent scouts, Aya Nakamura signed a record deal with the label, under which she released her debut album, Journal intime, in 2017, which reached #6 in the French charts and was certified Gold for selling over 50,000 copies nationwide. The album contains the single Comportement, certified platinum for 200,000 copies sold.
